Created decades ago and relaunched just this past autumn, the Girl Scouts of America GirlSports initiative was created to highlight all of the amazing sports and healthy-living activities that girls are involved in through Girl Scouts. GSUSA is proud to continue its’ century-long legacy of committing to girls’ leadership by actively engaging millions of girls in sports, nutrition, and healthy living.
In keeping with the spirit of #girlsports, Girl Scouts in Paris were thrilled to have had a recent opportunity to participate in a soccer clinic hosted by the Princeton Women’s Soccer Team. Unlike in the U.S., where girls as young as 4 and 5 are competing in “Pee-Wee” Girls Soccer Leagues, “le foot” (as soccer is called in France) is primarily a boys/mans sport here. Which is why our girls were thrilled to have an up-close demonstration by these Ivy League Champions. In the spirit of Sisterhood, a recently formed French girls soccer team from the 15th arrondissement, ACP15, were also invited to participate in the clinic. With our bilingual Girl Scouts acting as interpreters, the French team were quickly welcomed into the group.
The clinic started with warm-ups and stretches, then the girls were divided into groups by level to learn about the basics of shooting, heading, serving, dribbling, defending and passing from the pros. Lastly, the field was divided in half and two games were formed. Although most were armed with just the basics learned earlier that same morning, our Girl Scouts in Paris proved to be a force to be reckoned with on the field- the Daisies, as usual, were particularly fierce! The clinic ended with a photo session and an exchange of gifts- USAGSO-Paris patches for the Princeton Team, and Princeton Pennants and Tiger Bobble-heads for our girls.
With initiatives like GoSports and with local support like what we received from the Paris chapter of the Princeton Alumni Association, Girl Scouts in Paris hopes to continue to foster leadership skills in girls by encouraging their participation in sports activities.
